Feature Availability
When will video and screen share features be available for my subscription type?
OpenAI is rolling out video and screen sharing immediately for Teams users and most Plus/Pro subscribers through their latest mobile apps. Enterprise and educational plan users will gain access in early 2025. European Plus/Pro subscribers will receive access at a later date, though OpenAI hasn’t specified the exact timing.
Which platforms support the new video features?
ChatGPT’s video and screen sharing features are accessible through OpenAI’s latest mobile apps, desktop applications, and the web interface at chat.openai.com. Advanced Voice mode, which powers these features, works across all these platforms with support for over 50 languages.
Is video chat available in my region/country?
OpenAI hasn’t specified regional restrictions for video chat, except for European Plus/Pro subscribers who will receive access later. Santa Mode, which also uses video capabilities, is available globally wherever ChatGPT’s voice mode functions.
Are there usage limits for video conversations?
ChatGPT’s video features follow Advanced Voice mode usage limits, though OpenAI hasn’t specified exact quotas. For Santa Mode specifically, OpenAI resets Advanced Voice usage limits one time when users first interact with Santa, even if they’ve reached their daily or monthly limit.
Do I need specific hardware or software requirements?
OpenAI hasn’t explicitly stated hardware requirements in Kevin’s presentation, but users need access to either OpenAI’s latest mobile apps, desktop applications, or chat.openai.com through a web browser. A device with a camera and microphone is necessary for video interactions.
Technical & Usage
How do I start a video chat with ChatGPT?
To initiate a video chat, users need to click the Advanced Voice mode button in the bottom right of ChatGPT’s composer. OpenAI has added a video button on the bottom left of the interface, which activates the camera functionality. The feature is accessible through OpenAI’s mobile apps, desktop applications, and chat.openai.com.
How do I share my screen with ChatGPT?
ChatGPT’s screen sharing feature can be accessed by clicking the Advanced Voice mode icon, then selecting the drop-down menu to choose “Share Screen.” Once broadcasting starts, ChatGPT can see and interact with whatever is displayed on the shared screen, as demonstrated by Kevin Weil during the presentation.
Can I switch between video, voice, and screen sharing during a conversation?
OpenAI’s interface allows users to seamlessly switch between different modes during conversations. Users can toggle video on/off and switch to screen sharing through the interface buttons, though the Advanced Voice mode needs to remain active as the base feature for these interactions.
In how many languages does the video feature work?
ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice mode, which powers the video features, supports more than 50 languages. The multimodal 4.0 model processes audio input directly and generates audio output, enabling natural conversation pacing with appropriate emotion and tone across these languages.
What’s the difference between standard and advanced voice mode?
Advanced Voice mode uses OpenAI’s natively multimodal 4.0 model to process audio directly and generate responses with natural conversation pacing, emotional depth, and tone variations. Standard Voice mode remains available for basic interactions, especially after users reach their Advanced Voice usage limits.
Santa Mode
How long will Santa Mode be available?
OpenAI’s Santa Mode is available throughout December 2023, allowing users to interact with Santa using ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice features. Users can engage with Santa’s jolly voice and personality during the entire holiday season.
How do I access Santa Mode?
Users can access Santa Mode through two methods: clicking the snowflake icon on ChatGPT’s home screen or selecting Santa in ChatGPT settings. OpenAI has made this festive feature easily accessible through their mobile apps, desktop apps, and chat.openai.com.
Are there special usage limits for Santa Mode?
OpenAI offers a one-time reset of Advanced Voice usage limits for the first Santa conversation, even if users have reached their daily or monthly limits. After the initial reset, users can continue chatting with Santa using standard voice mode once Advanced Voice limits are reached.
Is Santa Mode available in all regions?
Santa Mode is available globally wherever ChatGPT’s voice mode functions. OpenAI has rolled out this feature across their latest mobile apps, desktop applications, and web platform at chat.openai.com.
Can I use Santa Mode without video features?
Santa Mode works with both Advanced Voice and standard voice modes. Users can continue interacting with Santa through text or standard voice even after exhausting their Advanced Voice limits, ensuring continuous access to the holiday experience.
Does Santa Mode work in languages other than English?
While OpenAI’s Advanced Voice supports over 50 languages, the demonstration only showed Santa speaking in English. The presentation by Kevin Weil and team didn’t specifically address Santa Mode’s language capabilities beyond English interactions.
Use Cases
What are the practical applications of video chat with ChatGPT?
OpenAI demonstrated several practical uses through Rowan’s pour-over coffee tutorial and team interactions. ChatGPT can provide real-time visual guidance, observe and correct techniques, and engage in face-to-face conversations that require visual context. Michelle, Jackie, and Rowan’s team introductions showed how ChatGPT can remember and reference visual details from conversations.
How can I use screen sharing effectively?
Kevin Weil demonstrated screen sharing by using ChatGPT to help compose message responses. Users can share their screens to get real-time assistance with writing, troubleshooting, or any task that requires ChatGPT to see what’s on their display. The feature works through a simple drop-down menu in Advanced Voice mode.
What types of tasks work best with video interaction?
Based on Rowan’s demonstration, ChatGPT excels at tutorial-style interactions where visual feedback is crucial, such as brewing coffee or learning new skills. The system can observe user actions, provide real-time corrections, and offer step-by-step guidance while maintaining natural conversation flow.
Can ChatGPT help with visual demonstrations and tutorials?
Rowan’s coffee-making demonstration proved ChatGPT’s capability to guide users through complex visual tasks. The AI provided specific feedback about pouring technique, explained concepts like “blooming,” and maintained engaging conversation while observing and commenting on the user’s actions in real-time.
Troubleshooting
What should I do if video features aren’t working?
OpenAI’s presentation didn’t specifically address troubleshooting steps. However, users should ensure they’re using OpenAI’s latest mobile apps, desktop applications, or chat.openai.com, as these are the only platforms supporting video features. Plus/Pro subscribers should verify their subscription status and region eligibility.
How can I improve video chat quality?
While Kevin Weil and team didn’t discuss video quality optimization, users should follow standard video chat best practices. The demonstrations by Rowan and the team showed clear, well-lit environments with stable internet connections during their interactions with ChatGPT.
What are the common issues users might encounter?
Based on the presentation, potential issues might include Advanced Voice usage limits being reached (though these reset once for Santa Mode), regional availability restrictions for European Plus/Pro users, and platform compatibility requirements. OpenAI acknowledged a recent system downtime, indicating they take operational issues seriously and provide detailed postmortems.
Who do I contact for technical support?
The presentation by Kevin’s team didn’t specify support channels for the new video and screen sharing features. Users experiencing issues should likely follow OpenAI’s standard support procedures through their existing customer service channels.
Enterprise & Education
When will enterprise users get access?
OpenAI announced that Enterprise and educational plan users will receive access to video and screen sharing features in early 2025. Kevin Weil specifically mentioned this timeline during the wrap-up segment of the presentation.

Santa Mode & Video in Advanced Voice—12 Days of OpenAI: Day 6
Transcript:
(00:04) Hey everybody, and welcome to Day 6. Before we get into today’s news, I want to acknowledge that we had a few hours of downtime yesterday. We know you depend on us, and we’re really sorry for the interruption. Uh, we take this super seriously, and the teams are working on a detailed postmortem that we’re going to post later today. Uh, but the good news is we’re back, we’re fully operational, and we’ve got a couple of exciting things for you right now. Uh, the first we’re going to keep secret and we’ll show you in a little bit. The second is that we’re
(00:33) excited to announce that we’re bringing video to Advanced voice mode, so you can bring live video and uh, also live screen sharing into your conversations with ChatGPT. And the best way I know how to do this is to just show it to you. So, uh, I’m going to go into uh, into ChatGPT, and you’ll see the normal Advanced voice mode button on the bottom right of the composer. I click it, and uh, as it loads here, we’ll give this one more try. There we go. All right, so you can see as we as we go into there, there’s now a couple more buttons on the bottom left.
(01:17) In particular, there’s this video button. And so here we are, and I can I’m going to introduce myself. Hey Chat, I’m Kevin. I lead product at OpenAI. Hi Kevin, it’s great to meet you. What can I help you with today? Well, actually, I’d love to introduce you to a few of my colleagues. Does that sound good? Sure, I’d love to meet them. All right. Hey Chat, I’m Michelle, and I’m an engineer on the ChatGPT multimodal team. Hi Michelle, it’s nice to meet you. An engineer on the ChatGPT multimodal team. That sounds exciting. It is, thanks.
(01:52) Hi Chat, I’m Jackie, and I’m the product lead for ChatGPT multimodal. Hi Jackie, it’s great to meet you too. Sounds like you’re all working on some really cool projects. We really are. Hey ChatGPT, I’m Rowan. I’m a researcher here at OpenAI on multimodal. Hi Rowan, it’s nice to meet you. Multimodal research sounds fascinating. All right, and now I want to see if you remember the folks that you met. So can I give you a quick quiz? Sure, I’m ready for a quiz. All right. What what was the name of my colleague that was wearing the reindeer
(02:28) antlers? That would be Michelle. All right, and how about the name of my colleague that was wearing the Santa hat? That would be Rowan. All right, good work. You’re two for two. You get an A. Thanks Chat. Thanks Kevin. This was fun. Let me know if there… We are so excited to start the rollout of video and screen share in Advanced voice today. We know this is a long time coming. So to recap, you can already talk with Advanced voice and ChatGPT out loud just like you would a coworker or a friend. Advanced voice uses our natively multimodal 40 model
(03:06) that means it takes in your audio directly, understands it, and outputs audio directly. As a result, conversations with Advanced voice have a much more natural conversation pace with a depth of emotion and tone across more than 50 languages. Starting today and over the course of the next week, we’ll be rolling out video and screen share in Advanced voice so that you can share real-time visual content with ChatGPT to make your conversations even richer and more useful. And here’s Rowan to show us more about what it can do. Yeah, so now you can
(03:38) chat with ChatGPT over video and voice together in real time. You can ask for help, troubleshoot, or use it to learn something new. So in fact, I’m going to try testing out right now. I’m going to have it uh, teach me how to make pour-over coffee. So I’m going to grab a couple of materials here, grab this and that, and then I’m going to fire up a new conversation with ChatGPT and hit the Advanced voice mode icon on the lower right. And then once it connects, I’ll share my video. Hey Chat, how’s it going? I’m doing great, thanks for asking.
(04:16) I see you’re wearing a Santa hat. I am. And do you see what I have in front of me? Yes, I see a coffee setup with a kettle and a dripper. Are you planning to make some coffee? I’d love to. Do you think you could walk me through the steps? Sure, I’d love to. First, place a filter in the dripper and rinse it with hot water to eliminate any papery taste. This also warms up the dripper and the mug. Great. So then what do I do next? You’ll add your ground coffee to the filter, usually about 2 tablespoons for every 6 oz of water. Then you’ll
(04:50) gently pour a small amount of hot water onto the grounds to let them bloom for about 30 seconds. Great, thanks. What’s bloom? Blooming allows the coffee to release gas and enhances the flavor. After blooming, slowly pour the rest of the hot water in a circular motion. Keep the water level consistent and let it drip through the coffee grounds into your mug. Cool. That sounds great. I’ll do the pouring now. Awesome. Take your time and pour slowly. This helps the water extract the coffee evenly for better flavor. Anything
(05:26) I could be doing different or better about my technique? Your technique looks good. Just keep a steady, gentle pour and make sure the coffee grounds remain evenly saturated. You’re doing great so far. Awesome. Thank you so much. You’re welcome. It looks like you’re almost done. Once the… So in addition to sharing your phone camera, you can also share what’s on your screen. So to test that out, I’m going to start a new conversation, hit the Advanced voice mode icon, and then go into this little drop-down menu and hit share screen. Once I
(06:03) start the broadcast, now ChatGPT will see what I’m showing it. And in fact, I’m I’d like to use it to ask for help in responding to a message. So I’m opening up my messages app. And then, hey ChatGPT, are you seeing my screen? Yes, I can see it. Looks like you’re in the messages app. How can I help? Can you help me respond to this one? Or what are you seeing here? First off, I see a message from someone asking if they have what it takes to be a professional mall Santa. They also sent a picture of themselves dressed up. Do you
(06:37) want to respond to their question? I’d like some help in doing that. So how should I tell Kevin that kindly, of course, that he shouldn’t quit his day job? You could say something like, “Hey Kevin, your Santa outfit is looking festive. Maybe keep practicing your ho ho ho, and you’ll be ready for the mall in no time.” That sounds great. Uh, thanks. You’re welcome. I’m sure Kevin will appreciate the encouragement. Anything else you’d like help with? That’s perfect. Well, I think Kevin makes a great Santa, but you don’t need Kevin to talk
(07:13) to Santa this year. Starting today and for the rest of December, you can talk to Santa directly in ChatGPT. You can ask Santa anything, whether you have questions about his life at the North Pole, curious about what the elves are up to, or looking for a fun Christmas story. As a parent with curious kids, Santa will respond in real time using his signature jolly voice. And finding Santa, it’s super easy. On the home screen, just look out for a snowflake icon. That’s going to be your festive entry point. You can also find and select Santa in the ChatGPT
(07:46) settings page. All right, let’s say hi to Santa. Hey Santa. Oh, well, hello there. It’s delightful to hear from you. Are you getting excited for the holidays? I’m so excited, Santa. I have a question for you. What’s your favorite Christmas tradition? What a wonderful question. My favorite Christmas tradition has to be the magical moment when children hang their stockings by the fireplace. It’s such a warm and cozy tradition filled with the anticipation of goodies and surprises. What’s your favorite holiday tradition? That’s a good one. Sia… and
(08:38) who’s your favorite reindeer? Well, that’s a tricky question. All of my reindeer are special in their own way. Rudolph, with his bright red nose, does hold a special place in my heart because of his guiding light, but Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, and all the others are just as important. They each bring their own magic to the sleigh team. Do you have a favorite reindeer, Santa? I have a question for you. How do I keep my beard in tip-top shape? Maintaining a magnificent beard takes a bit of magic and care. First, it’s important to keep it clean and well
(09:28) groomed. A bit of… be… Santa, we need some real feedback here now. What do you think? That’s a fabulous beard. It’s full and fluffy, just like mine. If you give it a little comb and maybe a sprinkle of holiday cheer, it will be in tip-top shape for Christmas. Santa, would you say that this is a great beard or that it’s the greatest beard? That my friend is a magnificent beard indeed. It’s truly one of the greatest beards I’ve seen, full of holiday spirit and cheer. Thank you, then Santa. Yes, what is it, my friend? All right, let’s recap how you can access these
(10:20) features. Video and screen share is rolling out in our latest mobile apps starting today. And over the course of the next week, we’ll be rolling out to all teams users and most Plus and Pro, Pro Plus and Pro subscribers. For Plus and Pro subscribers in Europe, we will get this feature to you as soon as we can. If you’re on an Enterprise or EDU plan, you’ll get access early next year. Santa is rolling out over the course of today globally everywhere you can use ChatGPT voice mode. That means you can talk to Santa on our latest mobile apps,
(10:55) our desktop apps, and on desktop web at chat.openai.com. And the first time you talk with Santa, we will reset your Advanced voice usage limits one time so that even if you’ve used up your limit for the day or for the month, you can talk with Santa in Advanced voice right away, even after your limits. You can also keep chatting with Santa in standard voice. We hope you enjoy your conversations with Santa as much as we have. All right, and just to wrap up, let’s get Santa’s perspective on one more thing. Santa, what’s your favorite Christmas joke?
(11:31) All right. What’s every elf’s favorite music? Rap music. A little elf humor for you all. All right, thanks, Santa. And I just wanted to say thanks to the engineers, researchers, PMs, designers, the entire team that’s been working on this for months to bring it to you. We’re super excited to see what you do with it. Thanks so much, and see you tomorrow. Happy holidays.
